2/24/25.
I often look over my record collection and wonder which LPs I can't get rid of. mclusky is in the never-get-rid-of category. I know I've extolled my love for this band many times, but I don't mind being repetitive.
"the world is still here and so are we" is the first new mclusky LP in 20 years. And really, it doesn't sound like they've taken a break at all. This is pummeling and melodic - and it kind of demands your attention.
It's funny. I looked on AllMusic for mclusky (Wales/Bristol) comparisons, and I own none of their "similar artists" - Les Savy Fav, Idlewild and Hot Snakes. I would say they remind me of Pixies, Soul Glo, Drug Apartments, Bits of Shit, and Psychic Soviets.
I waited one day too long to get any of the Bandcamp versions. So, I went to Townsend Music and got the vinyl/signed print package. This is being released by Ipecac Recordings.

This released in September and I've been listening to it regularly ever since. "Rack" is The Jesus Lizard's first offering in 26 years!! The foremost thing to mention is how utterly ferocious this offering is and how it seems like The Jesus Lizard never disbanded. Every last moment of Rack see's this band doing what they do as only they can. Still post punk, still raw, David Yow still has that vibe of someone duct-taped and thrown into the trunk of a car and madly screaming and yelling in both fear and anger. David Sims still innovates with his bass guitar styling- at once a foundation for the songs and also an entity in an of itself subject to incredible tangents and solo's. Mac's skin beating is more powerful than ever and Duane's guitar is unmistakable; YOU KNOW it's the Jesus Lizard because his guitar tells you it is.
I'm completely biased. The Jesus Lizard has been my favorite live band since first seeing them in the 90's. I hope Rack isn't simply a one-off and that there will be many more albums in their future. If Rack is a swansong, it is an exclamation mark of inspiration and integrity. You are never too old, never too drunk, never too out of shape to be unable to tap into what makes you, unmistakably YOU. So much love for this album and band. Favorite track: Alexis Feels Sick
I will quote Ipecac Recordings final line in their Rack description:
"They might not be young, but they will never, ever get fucking old."
5/5

Mclusky, the Cardiff noise-rock group led by Andrew Falkous, return with The World Is Still Here and So Are We, their first album in twenty years, out now via Ipecac Recordings. The record follows a run of pre-release singles including “Chekhov’s Guns,” “People Person,” and “Way of the Exploding Dickhead,” each accompanied by videos directed by Remy Lamont. Non-secular reptile lays waste to Manchester
David Yow’s Jesus Lizard wows Academy 2 with an early contender for gig of the year Words & Photos: Andi Callen Photography Note the date, Wednesday 8th January 2025. The new born year is still finding it’s feet, like Bambi on the ice, blinking as it’s eyes get accustomed to the light having been in total darkness. Then, emerging from a tour bus, hibernation is brought to an abrupt end as,…
